From Cars to Bikes to Glasgow

Submitted by Kylebug on Mon, 04/07/2008 - 21:19.

So more updates on the state of the nation. Today after much effort, organizing and badly-understood Scottish accents, we sold Djurgarden to a happy customer for £140. Yes, £610 less than what we paid for it! Happy days. Well, we're looking at it positively and the way we see it is we've made £140 more than what we thought we would've. On top of that, we're getting £40 back from the unused tax on the car, which means we stand to net £180. It will go nicely towards the £500 new car and 6 months worth of tax.

What was funny was the guy who eventually came to tow the car and hand over the currency. He was a mechanic in his twenties who after five minutes of seeing the car, told me that by the weekend it would no longer have a 1.0L engine, but rather a 2.0L! He had a spare 2L engine for the same model that he was going to pimp it with along with some racing decals and trims. No joke. He was going to pimp it into something crazy. At least it all worked out and we're happy that someone is going to be using it rather than just scrapping it in Inverness.

We're hopefully getting the new Peugot this weekend. It's coming all the way from Ayrshire. If you know Scotland, then you'll know that Ayrshire is also the home of Prestwick Airport, the airport which we have all come to hate over the last few months, see: early mornings and deathly 3am bus rides. Anyways, the new car is coming from Ayr and the crisp cold western Scottish coastline could only have helped the car through it's lifetime.

News from the weekend is that Jen is now the proud owner of a Falcon 26" frame ladies bicycle. I eventually convinced her of the enjoyment that can come from a bike, coupled with Rob and Louises enthusiasm for them, she eventually cracked and decided to let me buy one for her. We managed to pick one up second hand from a guy who lives about 10km west of us. We caught the bus out there yesterday afternoon and then whilst Jen caught the bus back, I rode it all the way along many many bike paths to our house. It was a magical afternoon, though quite cold, but I managed to find way more bike paths than I ever knew existed in Edinburgh. At one stage I was lost trying to find my way home but just kept on riding along the paths and managed to find my way eventually. Being mostly next to the sea helps because you always have a good point of reference on a bike. Some of the bike paths can really play tricks on your mind because of the way they bend around and around. Anyways, 10km later I was at the house and we then decided to take the first trial ride to Tescos down the road. Jen did great and it's amazing how far she's come in such a short time. Some of you will remember her horror story from Amsterdam a few years back when an Iranian man wanted to sell her hair to Barbie in return for the damage she did to his new BMW. He didn't really want to sell her hair... he was pretty angry though. So she's come a long way and now we'll be able to go for some k-rad rides around Edinburgh in the Summer. The summer which hasn't quite hit yet - today it was snowing whilst I was riding to work - as well as the fact that all the surrounding mountains are completely covered in snow. Scotland's weather is always good like that - totally unpredictable both in a bad and a good way.

Wednesday night is Shout Out Louds live in Glasgow at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut. Yes, the famous venue of Glasgow and yes, the even more famous Swedish band, Shout Out Louds. I can't wait... I want to be close enough to lick their sweat.
